Mastering is a crucial step in the record making process that is frequently skipped, and is consistently misunderstood.
After the final mix is completed, mastering gets your mix ready for mass consumption and duplication.
This process can involve eq, limiting, compression, effects, edits, and other alterations as directed.

IT'S NOT JUST LOUDNESS!
Frequently people assume mastering is just raising the volume of your tracks as much as possible, 
which is why many mixes end up squashed - sounding tiny, hollow, and compressed.
True Mastering involves getting a loud, vibrant, clear mix is the goal so your tracks sound exciting, professional and comfortable!
